Mammography is the use of film or a computer to create a picture of the breast. Under the direction of a radiologist, the certified TriHealth mammographer produces quality images of the breast for screening and diagnosis. A board-certified radiologist interprets the images. All TriHealth mammography services are accredited by the American College of Radiology and certified by the FDA.
A screening mammogram is done in women who have no signs or symptoms of breast problems. It usually involves two X-rays of each breast, which the radiologist studies for any abnormalities.
A diagnostic mammogram takes longer and may include additional views beyond the normal screening views. Diagnostic mammograms are reviewed by the radiologist at the time of your mammogram and help in the evaluation of:
- Abnormalities that have been seen or suspected on an earlier screening mammogram
- Abnormalities such as a lump, pain, thickening, nipple discharge or a inexplicable change in breast size or shape
- Breasts that are difficult to X-ray because of special circumstances, such as breast implants
